Prior to this moment, the temple served as the pathway between people and God. But a key detail in the death and resurrection of Jesus, noted in the gospels on the day of the crucifixion, was the tearing of the temple veil.
The temple veil was a physical barrier between the presence of God and people, through which only the high priest, ritually pure and without defect, was able to pass. And the veil was not a simple thin curtain. The Bible tells us the veil was constructed of fine linen, sixty feet high, thirty feet wide, and four inches thick! One day each year, the Day of Atonement, the high priest would pass through the temple veil, entering into the presence of God, offering sacrifices to atone for the sins of the entire nation. But while Jesus hung on the cross, the Bible tells us “the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” As of this moment, it would no longer be necessary for an intermediary between people and God.
Today, Resurrection Sunday, is the day Jesus rose up from the grave and defeated death, and in so doing, defeated the power of death for anyone who has committed their life to Christ. Resurrection Sunday is celebrated around the world, but at Westover Hills, we reflect on the power of resurrection each and every Sunday through communion; we break bread and consider the body, drink juice in remembrance of the blood, draw our minds to the power of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and the promise of eternal life that it gives.
The resurrection of Jesus tells us that physical death on earth is not the end, but merely the beginning of eternity with Him. This is the power and the hope we live in on this day.

The resurrection isn’t just a past event—it’s a living invitation to hope, transformation, and courage in the face of everything that feels like death. As you reflect on Jesus’ victory, consider these questions for your own journey.
• Where have you “seen the Lord?” in your life?
• What does it mean to you that Jesus didn’t just escape death, but defeated it?
• Where in your life right now do you long to experience resurrection—not just survival, but true renewal and new life?
