Spy Wednesday • Wednesday, April 16

On Wednesday of Holy Week, known traditionally as Spy Wednesday, the shadows deepen. It is on this day that Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, slips away from the circle of disciples and goes to the chief priests. In a quiet, calculated moment, he asks them, "What will you give me if I deliver him to you?" They count out thirty pieces of silver—the price of betrayal—and from that point on, Judas begins watching for an opportunity to hand Jesus over.

The unusual name "Spy Wednesday" comes from this hidden act of treachery, as Judas moves secretly, spying for the right moment to carry out his plan: “From this moment on, Judas sought an opportunity to betray Jesus.” Spy Wednesday is one of the traditional tags given to this day at the center of Holy Week. From that moment on, he was lurking, spying, looking for the right moment.

This day invites us into a space of sobering reflection. It reveals how betrayal often begins in the quiet corners of the heart, masked by closeness and familiarity. Judas was not an outsider—he walked with Jesus, shared meals, witnessed miracles. Yet something unseen had begun to harden in him. Spy Wednesday asks us to examine our own hearts: Are there places where we are withholding trust, resisting surrender, or entertaining hidden compromises? As the Passion draws near, this moment reminds us that even in the face of betrayal, Jesus walks forward in love, resolute in His mission to redeem.

Reflect
Judas’ bargain with the chief priests is a sobering reminder that betrayal doesn’t always come from enemies, and that the most dangerous compromises often begin unnoticed, in the hidden places of the heart. As we reflect today, we’re invited to let the light of Christ shine gently into our own shadows—not to condemn, but to heal.
Where are we holding back?
What small compromises are pulling us away from trust, love, and surrender?

The beauty of Holy Week is that even as darkness gathers, grace is still reaching. Pause for a moment and search your soul with these questions:
1. Is there an aspect of my life that I am attempting to keep in the shadows?
2. What would it look like to experience the light in this area?
3. The message of Jesus is that His grace extends to all. Do you believe that it even extends to you?

Did you know? The thirty pieces of silver offered to Judas equated to around four months of a laborer's salary, with some estimating the amount to be the equivalent of around $25,000 in modern times.
