Dec. 01, 2002 Dear Friends, We had a great Thanksgiving dinner at our house here in Yendi. All the Americans in this part of Ghana came: Dan & Kyle McVey and Fran and Jerry Thornton, plus the four Benskins, so we were eight. ;-) Fran, Richard, and Joanna all did a lot of the cooking, so I had a relaxed morning preparing the few things I enjoy making most. I am reminded of the cookbook, "The Flour is Different" - about the German immigrants to Texas. I'm sure they had the same bewilderment Fran and I have when many of the ingredients we can get here are definitely not American. The flavors and textures are not exactly the same as what we used for cooking in Texas, and some things didn't "gel" as well as they usually do, but everything was good. It was 67ºF at dawn this morning. Fran kept telling Jerry to shut the kitchen door - she was freezing! By mid-afternoon it was over 100ºF, but the Harmattan (wind off the Sahara brings dry dusty air) has begun, so the humidity is super low and it did not feel terribly hot. The power went out while I was doing a dressing at the clinic (I only had three today, and I did not see any of the regular patients, so I barely worked at all). We were afraid we were going to have the obnoxiously loud generator on during the "feast", but someone apparently came from Tamale really quickly and the power was on again after only a few hours, so we didn't need to use the generator at all. Later on Jerry and Richard used a heavy-duty jack and Jerry's truck and a lot on ingenuity to pull down a huge tree that had fallen against another one so it would not eventually land on anyone. I took pictures. I hope your holiday was pleasant, too.
