Dec. 12, 2001
Dear Friends,
Hope your holiday plans are coming along nicely. We are
enjoying great weather right now (meaning, the local people are freezing).
It got down to 66/ last night, and it stayed under 100/ all day! With
the humidity in the teens, that really is quite comfortable. Of course,
we have to spray water on our hair to keep it from standing on end, and
we use lots of lip balm and salt water nasal sprays. The "Harmattan" has
finally really arrived. This is the season when almost every breath of
breeze is from the North: the Sahara. So, as the season progresses, days
are increasingly hot and nights are cool. The air is choked with reddish-brown
dust which is so thick that you can look right at the sun without blinking.
Of course, this weather is keeping us busy at the clinic.
Lots of folks have respiratory trouble during the Harmattan, along with
the usual assortment of patients with malaria and other parasites, malnutrition
among the children, and accident victims of all ages. Peter has an important
meeting to attend in Kumasi, so I am seeing all the patients myself today.
Yesterday I was at the clinic seeing patients during the time I usually
do history with the kids, so Richard took the extra time to do an extended
physics lab with them: simple machines. The kids enjoyed using mechanical
advantage systems to lift their big Dad off the ground, and they learned
to tie a few knots on the side.
Please keep the following prayer requests in mind this
month:
a.. Our Texan co-worker, Jerry Thornton, suffered a minor stroke that
has affected his vision. Please pray for a complete recovery, so that
he can continue the tremendous work he does here.
b.. One of our Ghanaian co-workers, Niipak Laar, has been diagnosed with
a brain tumor that has affected his speech center. His brother is trying
to schedule surgery for him in Accra, and we pray that he can get in soon
and the results will be full recovery for him, as well.
c.. The Benskin family is not immune to the dust. Please pray that we
do not get sick from all the sinus irritation. Thanks for the prayers
for our health - we have now been here two years and none of us have had
malaria.
d.. Please pray that the Primary Health Care Worker's Handbook continues
to progress well. We have a course scheduled for March and we would like
to "beta test" the handbook at that time.
In the Service of Our King,
Linda
