Oct. 10, 2000 Dear Friends, I thank God that we are in the field at a time when email and other rapid global communications are a possibility. Hearing from our friends and family by email has truly been a great blessing to us. It is very difficult to get an "overseas" telephone line here, and we have no telephone in our home, so email is our main form of communication, even within Ghana. Still, Yendi is very much an underdeveloped area and technological infrastructure (including phone lines) is, at best, marginal. It is really kind of amazing that we are able to have email at all. We retrieve our email via our notebook computer at one of the crowded communications centers in "downtown" Yendi. Often, there is "no dialing tone," so we are advised to return later. Recently, all the lines in Yendi were down for several weeks! It is a rare day in which we receive all our messages without being disconnected and redialing at least once, if not many times. Due to the frequent disconnections and slow lines, a large message will often block our email completely. When one of us is travelling, that eliminates our ability to communicate with each other. Losing communication is frustrating and really hinders our work (and makes us lonely ; | ). Please feel free to send TEXT only UNFORMATTED messages, they rarely create a problem. We request that you refrain from sending attachments (photos, formatted documents, email on stationery, etc.) unless you make prior arrangements with us. If we are travelling to Tamale or one of the larger cities, we can usually get a good connection, so to send something special, arrange a time with us. We pray that someday the lines will be better and we will be able to receive whatever anyone chooses to send to us, but until then, thank you for your understanding. In His Service, |
